Who was Otis Blackwell?

Otis was a talented record producer with a keen eye for talent. His successful recordings of "Don't Let Go" Roy Hamilton and "Handyman" Jimmy Jones demonstrate this; also the fact that he was the first to record Frankie Valli & The Four Seasons and Johnny Rivers. Once asked what he considered his greatest accomplishment he said, "Producing a Mahalia Jackson Album."...Herbie Hancock said when introducing Otis, "If you are a musician and you write a song that becoms a hit and then becoms a standard, that means you are very lucky. But when you're a composer and have written songs that have shaped the foundation of a musical style, then what you have is a phenomenon." Syndicated columnist Frank Thomas Croisdale wrote,"Otis Blackwell very well may have been the greastest songwriter alive. Chances are the name doesn't ring a bell, but rest assured, you know the work of Otis and you'll carry it in your mind till you die."
